Marangu Route Trek & Northern Circuit Safari
This 11-day adventure combines two of Tanzania’s greatest experiences: summiting Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) and exploring the legendary wildlife parks of the Northern Safari Circuit.
The journey begins with a professionally guided trek via the Marangu Route, known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, offering comfortable hut accommodation and a gradual acclimatisation profile.
After reaching the Roof of Africa, the adventure continues with an unforgettable safari through Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater — home to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.
This itinerary is carefully designed to maximise summit success, wildlife viewing, and overall comfort while travelling with an experienced local team based at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro International Airport → Kilimanjaro Region
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by your driver-guide and transferred to your accommodation near the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.
In the evening, your mountain guide will conduct a comprehensive pre-climb briefing, reviewing the route, safety procedures, and checking your trekking equipment to ensure you are fully prepared for the adventure ahead.
This relaxing first evening allows you to settle in and enjoy views of Africa’s highest mountain.
Overnight: Kilimanjaro Foothills Gateaway
Altitude: ~900 m / 2,950 ft
Altitude: 1,870 m → 2,720 m
Distance: ~8 km | Hiking time: 4–5 hours
After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate (1,870 m) where the climb officially begins.
The trail leads through lush tropical rainforest, home to blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and vibrant birdlife.
This gentle ascent allows trekkers to gradually adapt to the altitude while enjoying the beauty of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes.
Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720 m) where you will enjoy dinner and rest for the night.
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Altitude: 2,720 m → 3,720 m
Distance: ~12 km | Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs into the heath and moorland zone, offering spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s dramatic secondary summit.
Vegetation becomes more sparse as giant lobelias and groundsels begin to dominate the landscape.
Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720 m) where you will rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the following day’s acclimatisation hike.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Altitude: 3,720 m (hike up to ~4,000 m)
Today is dedicated to altitude acclimatisation, an essential part of increasing summit success.
You will take a short hike toward Zebra Rocks (approx. 4,000 m) before returning to Horombo Hut for lunch and relaxation.
This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to the thinner air.
Enjoy the afternoon resting and taking in magnificent views of both Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Altitude: 3,720 m → 4,700 m
Distance: ~10 km | Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Today’s trek crosses the wide alpine desert known as “The Saddle”, a vast high-altitude plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
The landscape becomes stark and lunar-like as you approach Kibo Hut (4,700 m).
After an early dinner, you will rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut
Altitude:
4,700 m → 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak) → 3,720 m
Distance: ~22 km
Hiking time: 10–14 hours
Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight.
By headlamp, you slowly ascend steep volcanic slopes toward Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa.
Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment, with breathtaking views across glaciers and the African plains below.
After celebrating at the Roof of Africa, you descend back to Kibo Hut, rest briefly, and continue down to Horombo Hut.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Altitude: 3,720 m → 1,870 m
Distance: ~20 km | Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Your final descent takes you back through lush rainforest to Marangu Gate, where successful climbers receive their official Kilimanjaro summit certificates.
You will then transfer to your accommodation in Arusha to relax and celebrate your incredible achievement.
Overnight: Kilimanjaro Foothills Gateaway
Safari Style: Budget Camping Experience

Overnight: Migombani Camp
Today you travel toward the legendary Serengeti National Park, with wildlife viewing along the way.
The Serengeti is world-renowned for its vast plains, incredible predator populations, and the Great Migration.
Spend the afternoon exploring the park on game drives searching for lions, cheetahs, elephants, and countless other animals.
Overnight: Nyani Public Campsite
Begin the day with a morning game drive in Serengeti, when wildlife is most active.
Later, continue toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, enjoying scenic landscapes along the way.
Arrive at the crater rim where breathtaking views overlook one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife habitats.
Overnight: Simba Public Campsite
Early in the morning, descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
